‘Someplace, that nobody, kiss nor kin, can take you beyond,’
I’ve always been exposed to materials; sewing, fabrics, paint, nail polish, pencil, charcoal, paper; anything that was accessible. My grandmother always sewed, crocheted, and collected fabrics and materials. We often went to a fabric store (Shoutout to Sewfisticated, they’re still rocking and according to Tia Baby they did much for the community during Covid :) in East Cambridge, which was my earliest love of material. I moved naturally more towards drawing on paper as I got older, but still love collecting material. In high school I started the first real academic work on my technical skills after meeting a local woodworker and artist B Goode.
This, in addition to working as a metal worker’s assistant, and around my family’s trade of music, exposed me to expression in a way that feels essential. After High School, I studied at FIT in illustration, where we studied anatomy, technique, the old masters - and - streetwear, textiles, and trends… and commercial applications. Some of it stuck.
I’m interested most in how the process feels, and whether the truth of a moment is boyed up and diluted, or real and unsure. This usually dictates what materials I use and how. Some materials sit around until the time is right. Some materials I collect, not knowing how to use them, just because they seem interesting. The meeting of these opportunities, my emotion, and whatever technical experience I have create a moment.
Most of my work pinpoints a time or experience in my life; drawn naturally towards nature, sound, saturation, and texture.
I now work in Upstate NY, finishing and collecting the work I’ve made over the last 5 years.
